10 High School Musicals That Aren’t High School Musical

Oh, High School. there’s no place quite like it. Whether you want to admit it or not, the years we spend in high school are often some of the most colorful, dramatic and (maybe even) stressful years in a teenager’s life. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, one that has been portrayed in movies, television, and on all types of social media. But something you may not have known is that Broadway has it’s own handful of high school dramas/comedies that will leave you feeling nostalgic and/or ready to take on the high school scene.
1. Band Geeks
This quirky new musical follows the lives of a group of self proclaimed “band geeks” as they navigate the trials of high school from an outsider’s perspective.
2. Grease
A total classic, Grease follows a group of teens in the 1950’s as they learn to embrace the ever changing dynamic of their high school independence.
3. Heathers: The Musical
Fierce, fresh and so very, this musical follows Veronica Sawyer during her senior year as she becomes increasingly close to the heads of her high school hierarchy known as the Heathers.
4. One Day
This captivating pop-rock musical is based off of actual journal entries from high school students and works to captures the individual trials of real life teenagers, struggling to fit into the status quo.
5. Dear Evan Hansen
A quiet high school senior struggles to manage his anxiety and finds himself wrapped up in controversy following the death of a classmate from his school.
6. Bring It On: The Musical
This energetic new musical shares the story of two high school cheer teams as they rival for a chance to attend one of the world’s top cheering competitions.
7. Carrie
A dark and disturbing horror musical, based off of the Stephen King novel of the same name, follows a socially repressed teenage girl who comes to learn she has supernatural powers.
8. Hairspray
Tracy Turnblad has big dreams for herself as she auditions for one of her favorite t.v. dance shows and ends up becoming an overnight sensation.
9. Fame
High school artists learn to deal with the ups and downs of their craft as they navigate the competitive world of visual and performance art in New York City.
10. Bare: A Pop Opera
Two high school lovers struggle to maintain their relationship and come to terms with their identities at a Catholic boarding school.
